Understanding Your Child’s Dental Insurance

Understanding Your Child’s Dental Insurance

A Simple Parent Checklist

We know dental insurance can feel confusing. This guide is designed to help parents ask the right questions and better understand their child’s benefits before treatment.

STEP 1: Before Your Appointment

  • Make sure your dental insurance is active
  • Bring your current insurance card
  • Let us know if your insurance recently changed
  • Confirm the provider your child is scheduled with participates with your dental policy

Tip: Being “in-network” may lower your out-of-pocket costs.

STEP 2: Ask Your Insurance Company These Important Questions

Coverage Basics

  • What is my yearly maximum benefit?
This is the total amount insurance will pay each year.
  • Has any of that benefit already been used this year?
For example, at another dental office or orthodontist.
  • Do I have a deductible?
This is the amount you pay before insurance starts helping.
  • Are there waiting periods?
Some plans require you to wait before certain procedures are covered.

STEP 3: Pediatric Dental Questions

  • Are exams and cleanings covered? How often?
  • Are X-rays covered? How often?
  • Is fluoride covered for children? How often?
  • Are sealants covered?
    • On what teeth? 1st molars, 2nd molars, premolars?
    • Until what age?
    • How frequently can they be replaced?
  • Does my policy cover composite resin fillings (white fillings) or do they downgrade to amalgam fillings (silver fillings)?
  • Are stainless steel crowns covered? Is indirect pulp therapy covered?
  • Are space maintainers covered?
  • Does my plan include orthodontic benefits or braces?

Children’s dental plans can have age limits and special rules for coverage.

STEP 4: Understand Your Plan Limits

  • How many cleanings are allowed each year?
  • Are there limits on X-rays or fluoride treatments?
  • Are certain procedures excluded?
  • Does insurance require pre-approval for treatment?
  • Are there age restrictions for some services?

STEP 5: Understand Your Financial Responsibility

    • Ask what percentage insurance pays
      Examples: 100%, 80%, or 50%
    • Ask what amount may become your responsibility
  • Remember that insurance estimates are NOT guarantees of payment
  • Understand that insurance companies make final payment decisions after claims are processed

Helpful Tips When Calling Insurance

  • Ask the representative to explain things in simple terms
  • Write down the name of the representative you spoke with
  • Request a reference number for the call
  • Ask for benefit details to be emailed to you if available
